Letter States, January 25, 1836, Dear Son, I feel much obliged to you for your letter. It would give me much pleasure to dine at the Club on Saturday next but I fear that I shall not be able to partake of any festivities this week being humbled with a severe cough that renders ??? for me to take great care of it. I fear that I shall be also prevented from attending the fancy ball on Thursday. I am going to see Johnson about it today at Birmingham. I am dear Son, yours very truly, Chandos Leigh. (P.S.) I have just heard it reported my ?? friend & neighbor, Lord Houd is dead, I hope it is not true. Chandos Leigh (1791-1850) was a schoolmate of Byron at Harrow; as a young man he was part of a circle of young liberals, including Byron, Hobhouse, Sheridan, etc., who congregated at Holland House. Leigh's literary career began with the publication of several volumes of verse, much esteemed by his friends. His later efforts were for the most part privately printed in Warwick. Chandos Leigh was also the cousin of Jane Austen.
