Bohn, Lawrence W. Noyes and Ralph Isham. ALL SIGNATURES ARE ON A 4 1/2 BY 3 INCH CARD STOCK GLUED TO FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Below glued card inscribed by original owner of this set is : As well as a small inscription stating: Bertha Bowlby Bohn, member National Geographic Society and Chicago Geographic Society; and dated May 9, 1910. Vol 1. Condition of book spine and edges have rubbing with some chipping, corners bumped lightly chipped, shaken spine, endpapers foxing, fore edges deckled, front and back inner boards are cracked at hinges, cloth binding (cover) is detached from spine, tanned text, and a bookplate on front endpaper, Vol. II: spine rubbed and has 2 inch tear in the cloth, edges are chipping, corners bumped and chipped, bookplate on front inner board, previous owner's name & date on fep, maps inside pocket folder pasted to back inner board, endpapers foxing, fore edges deckled, tanned text, shaken spine, both front/back inner boards are cracked at the hinges Additional postage will be required 1 . Contains a an extremely scarce advertising brochure envelope which was mailed to Bertha B. Bohn, 10964 Prospect Ave., Morgan Park, Illinois. The brochure envelope is postmarked Jan. 3 1909, from Philadelphia, 7:30 AM. The brochure has 7 illustrations, which consist of: (1) Four men and a horse pulling a sled by S.L. Wood; (2) Illustration of Shackleton in Dinner attire (suit and tie); (3) Two men (probably Shackleton) in a motor car near winter quarters; (4) Illustration of approx. 16 penguins socializing (5) Three men (one is probably Shackleton) standing 97 geographical miles of the South Pole, with a British flag thrust into the ground (6) An exploring party looking into the crater of Mount Erebus (7) Four men (Mackay, David, Adams, Marshall) at a remarkable fumarole in the old crater, in the form of a couchant lion. The brochure is separated in 4 pieces separated at folds but complete. Unique brochure was designed as an envelope designed as a mailer to be cut up. Contained in the brochure is a post card order form for the two volume set of The Heart of the Antarctic 1909 for $10.00. Size of the brochure unfolded measures 19.5 X 10 . General wear, age-toned, edges slightly chipped. 2 . A newspaper article is laid in as well. The article is dated January 31, 1932, and has an image which is 11.75 X 4.5 , with the caption: Great Britain's Memorial to one of its Great Explorers; A statue of Sir Ernest Shackleton Unveiled by the Marquess of Zetland in Ceremonies at the Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, London (Times Wide World Photos). General wear, age-toned, edges slightly chipped. 3 . Also, a tri-fold brochure dated June 28, 1909. Size unfolded is 24 X 11 , and folded size is 8 X 11 . The cover of the brochure says Orchestra Hall, Monday Evening, May 9, one lecture only, Auspices: The Geographical Society of Chicago, promoting the book Farthest South. Contains eight illustrations: (1) On the cover is a 4 X 9 illustration with 5 conflicting scenes with Shackleton in the center. (2) Shackleton holding his daughter in his arms (3) Penguins (4) The phonograph at work with a man sitting next to it, as well as, penguins in the background. (5) The motor car on the ice (6) Adelae penguins quarreling over the ownership of a nest (7) Four men looking back at the British flag blowing in the wind farthest south. (8) Map showing the route of Shackleton from the day he left Lyttelton, New Zealand, on Jan. 1, 1908, until he planted the Union Jack, given him by Queen Alexandra at South latitude 88 degrees 23', 111 miles from South Pole, thus beating the world's record by nearly one hundred miles.
